Spirituality and the Billions of Years of Life on Earth
A spiritual and philosophical reflection from the third day of a retreat in Alpbach, Austria, near the resting place of Erwin Schrödinger. The speaker connects Schrödinger with Galileo and the search for where human knowledge went astray.
The piece reflects on the ancient foundations of science, medicine, democracy, Aesop’s Fables, the Hippocratic Oath, and the respect for women found in Greek culture. From this perspective, science and spirituality were not always separated. The rift came later.
The reflection expands the meaning of prophecy. A prophet is described as one who speaks truth, and truth is often hard to bear. The speaker calls Socrates a prophet because he brought new teachings, and extends that idea to scientists and truth-seekers. If there is a Creator of the material world, then anyone who speaks truth about that world is, in a sense, speaking prophetic truth.
The central question is how spirituality relates to the billions of years that the material universe has existed and the billions of years during which life has developed on Earth.
The speaker then looks to the paleontological record. Once life began on Earth, it exploded in variety, but certain body types and patterns continued. Whales, humans, horses, dogs, and birds are used as examples of forms that worked and survived. The reflection asks whether nature carries an imprinted pattern that expanded and endured.
That pattern has survived five major extinctions, including events in which more than 95% of life was destroyed. Yet life recovered and returned strong, beautiful, and diverse.
The conclusion is hopeful. Science shows the resilience of nature. Spirituality suggests a long-term plan behind that resilience. Humanity does not need to live in fear of the end of the world. Bigger things than humanity have threatened life, and life has recovered. The real task is to care for the people around us and help them overcome the troubles they face.
